I dig the fact that Azaelia Banks still sounds British. Like, she didn’t swap her sound once American media picked her up. Her shit is still dope. And when I mean “British”, I’m talking about her music- its still dance music. I don’t know what it is exactly, but I’ve heard a few UK hip hop acts rap over straight dance beats- dance and club music seems to permeate the entire music scene over there. And that is something that does not happen over here. You won’t hear an MC spit over a D&B cut, or hear someone rap over a legitimate house track. Not even ‘Ye does that; so that’s one thing I feel artists are uncomfortable to do over here. ‘Cross the pond, it doesn’t seem like that’s a problem at all. So big ups to Banks for sticking to what she does, and shying away from the (rapidly shrinking creatively) world of popular “urban music”. Here in the states artists have to make that decision when it comes to that genre split, and I feel she’s made the right one, so she can go on making music she wants. And hopefully, when the A&Rs and the journalists in the “urban music” world finally see that Banks has gotten “urban” America dancing, we might get to see some strange changes in popular hip hop.
