I wish Obama was annoying.
Sometimes I feel sad for the conservatives that just plain hate Obama.
Because their only candidate pulled an Obama before Obama pulled an Obama.
But then I remember not to feel sorry for them, because they obviously don’t have a good reason to hate the legislation. Because when they are shown the provisions in the bill, they really do like it. As long as you don’t tell them its Obama’s (I wonder what would happen if we showed them Romney’s…). Its like they are 6 year olds who hate eating their vegetables, but if you spoon feed them with their eyes shut, they love it. They just hate Obama, for silly reasons lol.
I’m not happy with how Obama, his administration, and the Democratic party at large marketed the bill, or rather, their failure to do so. They forgot to take into consideration how everything he proposes is rabidly opposed, regardless of what it is. As a result, they missed the opportunity to define the bill themselves. It was important to just get it through, but A stronger push should’ve been made to inform the public. (Remember the Patriot Act? That was so easy to push because of that climate, but we all remember how it was marketed and pitched. It was done so well that no one even cared to actually read the legislation- and historically, its as important as this health care thing.)
Yes, it would be faced with even more opposition, but at least it could be fought with informed opinions. I agree that it may have seemed too difficult and a waste of effort and energy on the administration’s part, but when the survival of the bill is at stake, you got to do what you got to do.
But Obama seems to think missed that boat, so he’s going to bank on just waiting the opposition out. I think that will work- the opposition is just a bunch of empty-headed idiots running off of hot air. But there are a bunch of them, so Obama is going to be making it out of plenty of fights by the skin of his teeth.
Obama is one to play fair, stick to the system, play by the book. He hasn’t done well in controlling the conversation. I’m sure he’s great at it, but unlike other presidents, he has one of the loudest, slick-tonged oppositions in history. He doesn’t have to betray his values by being negatively aggressive, like they are, but he needs to be ruthless in getting his agenda out there.
He needs to be in America’s ear all the time like FDR was, or have a solid mission/narrative/rhetoric that is easy to market like Reagan. But Reagan and FDR were working with a nation that was with them en mass. They could do whatever they wanted (above and under the table). Obama hopes to pull several FDRs and Reagans- he has to- but he’s sitting in a terrible political climate.
He’s got to be aggressive, and since he’s not the one to work the negative, he’s got to be ruthless with the positive. The man has to stop being cool, and start being annoying.
