It's only culture if it's white culture.

The other day at work, I was working the fitting room, and something hilarious happened.

Two young Black men were in the fitting room trying on tank tops. One of the tank tops has Jim Morrison, front man of the Doors, screen printed on the front; he is shirtless.

One of the young men says, “Nah, man. I can’t fuck with that shirt — it has a naked dude on it!”, to which the other guy says, “But, don’t you know who this is? This is Jimi Hendrix!”

And, I burst out laughing. I said, “Not to be in your conversation, but uh, that isn’t Jimi Hendrix. First off, Jimi Hendrix was Black, and had an afro. Secondly, that’s Jim Morrison from the Doors. Same time period, but, two completely different guys”. He said he was embarrassed and my only thought was that if you know the name, you should know the face, right? Plus, I mean, Jimi is one of our few known contributors we get to Black faces of rock n’ roll.

Anyway, days later, I told my co-worker, Michael. A know it all typical White Dude TM. This is the same guy that said, “I mean, it’s pretty much reverse racism — actually, it’s just plain old racism (towards white people)”, so I was a little apprehensive.

This fool says, in the middle of me telling the story, “Wait — were they two ghetto dudes?” Sidenote: all the fucking white people at my store use “ghetto” for Black and I am fucking SICK of it. I said they were two young Black guys, not “ghetto” guys.

He said that he was asking because this would determine their ‘cultural aptitude’. I scoffed. I let him know that not everyone’s culture is the same and you don’t have to know the Doors or any old rock n’ roll to be considered cultured.

He argued that you do. He said you CANNOT be cultured and NOT know who the Doors are. Uh? We’re in our 20’s. Jim Morrison DIED in the 70’s. THE 70’S, AS IN 20 YEARS BEFORE WE WERE BORN! Why would your average Black male in their teens be up the ass of the Doors? Seriously?

White people don’t know shit about our music unless it’s to be ironic. They don’t know any of our legends. Not from R&B, Jazz, Hip Hop or anything else, unless it’s on the radio or being played at one of their racist ass parties. But Black people are uncultured if we don’t worship washed up rock musicians? Not to mention that is a genre of music they took from us anyway?!

It just reminded me of that quote going around — a thing we’ve known for years — that Black people must know and learn and absorb everything of the bland, white culture… but they must know nothing of ours unless to humor us.

Fuck that.

Fuck elitist ass white people who make it seem like their arts are the only ones that give you culture, when all they are is an amalgamation of our art.

Next time tell him he ain’t cultured unless he knows about the king, the one, the only Little Richard. Im sure he wouldn’t know shit

My vocal coach had no idea of the existence of any of the following people:

  • Stephanie Mills
  • Cissy Houston
  • BeBe and CeCe Winans
  • Melba Moore
  • Heather Headley
  • Jennifer Holliday(!!!)
  • Xscape(!!)
  • Stacy Lattisaw(!)

And had never even heard of “Strange Fruit” until a month ago.

But she is in a pop group that has been locally successful, and has several songs (and at least one video) on iTunes.

I love her to death, she’s a really good singer, and she’s helped me focus a lot more than I had been, and she’s not trying to get me to sing Streisand or anything. And she knows a lot of what are considered the classics (eg., Ain’t No Way by …well, you know who it’s by). But really? Really though? She is my age, she is teaching other people the R&B method of singing (which she’s decent at, btw), but doesn’t know any of these incredible voices? How did you listen to R&B in the 90s and not know 702? I had to remind her that Faith Evans even existed.

But we gotta know everybody. We gotta know all our favorites and then theirs, too. If we don’t love us some Rolling Stones, we must be uneducated rubes. If we ain’t on that Beatles bandwagon, we musta missed the boat.

Nah, man. We ain’t miss no boat. We was on the bridge.

Hi! I have a question about black guys dating white girls I grew up in a predominantly white area and now I go to an HBCU and recently my brother went to prom with a white girl and I showed all my friends here the picture and they didn't like it. I asked them why and they said because it's not right. And then I saw your post about feeling guilty about dating a white girl. So I guess what I'm asking is why isn't it right?

Its not right or wrong.

I can’t say what’s up with your friends, but I still have a prejudice towards white people- which is mostly artificially constructed, because I grew up around white folk all the time. I still have this sense that a white person couldn’t fully understand me, and that I couldn’t trust them, or their people.

Now, your friends may have been put off because people of color are, and have been fetishised and objectified. That goes on a great deal- happened to a friend of mine. Some white people are “curious” about dating black men and women…you know the deal. So that’s all your freinds could have seen or thought.

But it doesn’t matter at all. What I have is an irrational prejudice.  So its not right or wrong. If you take a genuine liking to someone, their race shouldn’t matter. But don’t pretend like it means nothing, in every other aspect of life.

You know I still feel feels about dating white girls.

I’m embarrassed to say I have been seeing one. Ashamed even.

Its like I am always worried about a black woman’s judging eye or something.

I don’t know. I got this construct in my head that I’ve built there, and can’t get around. Like I’m supposed to end up with a Lauryn or Esperanza.

There isn’t one person I know who would have a problem with it. Not one. Even my parents.

They would all find it hilarious.

Every last one of them.

I still worry about falling for one.

So its just me.

I wonder if there’s a black girl out there who feels the same way about white dudes. But all she sees are white dudes around, and she’s mad lonely.

Ha well I don’t know where she is

lol

My roommate.

My roommate has been burying himself in military paraphernalia for the past semester.

Every WWII film. Every recent flick since Black Hawk Down. Any flag-waving country. That Eminem song (from the Black Hawk Down soundtrack). Posters.

You realize that the fantasy of war that is sold to us is what recruits soldiers.

The way they act on film is the way they act on duty. For for the first few days.

And when they realize what war is (its different for everyone), they don’t know how to react. They don’t know how to react when they face the real.

So they don’t react. And they just try to make sense of the real by thinking the bullshit they see on the reel makes sense.

I’m talking about those who enlist for no reason.

And these days, “protecting my/your/our freedom” is one of those bullshit reasons.

But there are reasons. They are different for many, and I don’t know them. They are there. Don’t ever think men fight for no reason- get your head out your ass. But many of them fight for bullshit reasons. Yes, people put their lives on the line for bullshit reasons. Fighting for your brother next to you is not a bullshit reason. However, tying that to some bullshit fed to you earlier is bullshit.

My roommate wants to be a Catholic chaplain. Reserves.

I’m sure he’d make a great one. I’m sure “niggerfaggot” is used often in scripture. Somewhere…what’s important is that he makes The Word easy to relate to, that’s all, right? Whatever works.

(oh I’m sure he’s a nice guy. good christian too. but he’s buying into bullshit, and he’s a smelly idiot.)

I’m one to not act on infatuation. I hold out on crazed crushes until the fantasy and whimsy dries up and blows away. So I can see if there’s anything that matters underneath. I don’t like looking though “love goggles”. My lenses are never rose-tinted.

My problem is that I find reasons not to continue. If that initial pull isn’t so strong that I must move, I find reasons to hold back.

I don’t remember the last time I was head over heels, for anyone. And for someone that instantly clings to nearly everything else, often for very little reason at all, I find this a bit strange.
